The Prince's historic stand on Jerusalem
Observers unanimously underline the importance of the historic stand taken by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, in his speech delivered yesterday at the opening session of the International Conference on Jerusalem, hosted by the State of Qatar.
His Highness submitted a proposal to the conference aiming at requesting the Security Council "to adopt a resolution setting up an international commission of inquiry that would investigate all the actions taken by Israel since the 1967 occupation of Arab Jerusalem to obliterate its Islamic and Arabic identities." The words of His Highness very clearly expressed the vigilant Arab and Islamic conscience regarding Jerusalem's religious sanctuaries, of interest to both Muslims and Christians, and the need to carry the historical responsibility of protecting them from the Israeli continuous aggressions aiming at the Judaizing of the whole city. Observers noted with great interest HH's straightforward appeal to the Arab and Muslim rulers, saying: "Forgive me when I say that we, rulers, are all underachieving in the battle to preserve the Arab and Islamic identities of Jerusalem". We say that the important content of His Highness' speech upholds optimism to see in both Arab and Islamic scenes an acceleration of sincere meaningful efforts and practical concrete steps to enforce rights and to prevent Israel from continuing its systematic aggressive violations in holy Jerusalem.
