The
Club de Monaco is a civil society think tank founded
in Mars 2002 by French diplomat Claude de Kemoularia
in partnership with the President of the Italian
Institute for International and Political studies (ISPI)
and the President of the French Institute of
International Relations (IFRI).
It soon emerged as a privileged space for exchanging
ideas and opinions and offering solutions to issues
affecting the Mediterranean region, and by extension
the Middle-East and the whole world.
Attended by an
elite of current and former leaders, decision-makers
and diplomats, the Club’s meetings are closed
sessions where sensitive matters are open to free
and learned North-South debates and discussions
meant to overcome cultural, historical, religious
and political differences thanks to the rooted
belief that arguments and conflicts should be
addressed by bringing all sides together in a
tolerant and constructive dialogue.
In his opening speech at the 2010 meeting, H.E. the
Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the State of
Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al-Thani
said:
’ We meet here today for the second time so as to
discuss topics that affect the public policies, as
well as the political, social and economic
transformations that are developing rapidly in the
European and south Mediterranean regions.’
He went on to define the Club de Monaco’s role as a
provider of practical solutions to be conveyed to
decision-makers in the region and worldwide. He then
gave examples of topics submitted to the meeting’s
scrutiny:
• the new states in Europe
• peace in the Middle East
• stability and comprehensive security
• human development in the southern part of the
Mediterranean and in the Middle East
• relations between the Europeans on the one hand
and the Arabs and Muslims on the other hand
• the financial crisis
• the establishment of the Palestinian state on the
territories recognized by the United Nations, and
protection of the Palestinian people, as well as
enhancement of its security and stability
H.E. then broadened the scope of the debates to
outside the Mediterranean region, and invited the
attendees to discuss issues such as:
• stability in south-west Asia
• the Iranian nuclear programme
• situation in Somalia and the Horn of Africa
• immigration to Europe
• energy security
• water, food and free trade
•reform in the field of trade, human rights and
international organizations, collective security,
governance, and civilized communication
Similarly to the two previous Meetings that were
also held in Doha in 2008 and 2010, there are
numerous and hot topics on the menu of the 2012
Meeting, drawn from the accelerating march of
History, starting with the Arab Spring, but also the
recent withdrawal of USA forces from Iraq and the
latest developments regarding the Iranian nuclear
and Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
The 2012 Club de Monaco Meeting will be held on
February 24th and 25th at the Four Seasons Hotel
Doha, with the participation of 50 VIPs from 18
countries.
The 2012 Club de Monaco Meeting is the third of its
kind to be held in Doha, it will pursue its debates
over topics such as the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, the North-South relationships, the Arab
Spring and other key issues in the Middle-East over
3 days from February 23th to 26th at the
Four Seasons Hotel.
