Kamal elected economic council chief

Doha: The Economic and Social Council yesterday held a preparatory meeting for the 24th session of Arab League Summit. The meeting was attended by Arab ministers of finance, economy and commerce as well as members of the delegations.

 

The Minister of Economy and Finance H E Youssef Hussein Kamal assumed the presidency of the meeting, replacing Iraqi Trade Minister Dr.Khairallah Hussein Babiker, who presided over the 23rd session of the summit.

 

The meeting discussed follow-up to and implementation of economic and social decisions approved by the previous summits, in addition to difficulties hindering the completion of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.

The meeting also discussed an initiative presented by Palestine on the development of infrastructure in Palestine, as well as means to strengthen the work of the specialized Arab organizations, in addition to a study proposed by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) to create a funding

mechanism to sustain agricultural development over the next two decades and an emergency food security program in the Arab world.

 

In the area of social affairs and in the framework of the fight against illiteracy amongst women in the Arab region, the council discussed raising the efficiency of learning and training targeting women to enable them become self-reliant and engage them in political, social and economic life.

 

Algeria confident

 

Algerian Foreign Minister MouradMedelci has expressed great confidence in the ability of the

Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to ensure the success of the Summit, despite the difficult circumstances the region is going through.

 

In an interview with Qatar News Agency, Medleci said the summit will be held amid a lot of Arab issues that require finding solutions for its success.
He expressed great confidence in the Emir who will chair the summit and the Arab leaders saying:"That will make us optimistic that the Doha summit will be successful",Medleci said.

 

In response to a question about the most important topics on the agenda, Medelci said there are

many topics, regarding developments of the Palestinian problem and the Arab-Israeli conflict, will be submitted to the summit for consideration by the Arab leaders as well as developments on the Syrian crisis, topics related to the joint Arab action and the development of the Arab League and its specialized organizations including the establishment of the Arab Court of Human Rights.
