DOHA: World attention is being attracted to Doha ahead of the forthcoming South summit of the G-77 Plus China due to convene in Doha on June 15 and 16 with the participation of a large number of heads of governments and states expected to address key economic and trading issues of south-south cooperation and other development-related matters.

Doha has already completed preparations to host this major event, which takes place amidst major global changes and critical international developments. The choice of Doha as a venue provides further evidence to its prestigious position on the regional and international levels and reconfirm its remarkable role in contribution to international peace and security

Over the past year, Qatar has chaired the G-77 plus China, which comprises some 132 member states, some 50 of which are least developed countries. The five-day event, will start on Sunday with an expert-level meeting that would be followed by a ministerial meeting the next day. The ministerial meeting of G-77 plus China will be opened by First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani on Monday.

On the sidelines of the foreign ministers meeting, the Non-Aligned Movement would hold a ministerial meeting to be chaired by Malaysia. The two-day summit meeting, due to convene at the level of heads of states and governments, will be opened on Wednesday. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Luxembourg prime minister who is the current president of the European Union and the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan are among the top dignitaries invited to the summit. Some 60 heads of states and governments are expected to take part in the summit, which has attracted some 600 to 800 journalists and newsmen.
