The Emir of Qatar opens the Second South Summit: Qatar donates 20 million US dollars for a proposed Fund for the Development of the South. His highness the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, opened on Wednesday June 16th, in Doha, Qatar, the Second South Summit of the Group of 77 and China. Some 75 Heads of State and Government are taking part to this large scale event which gathers 132 countries of the Developing World. In his opening speech, the Emir of Qatar welcomed the participants to the Summit and expressed the wish that the outcome of this important gathering responds to the expectations and aspirations of the peoples of member countries and to the ambitions of their leaders aiming at insuring prosperity and quality of life for everybody. The speech of His Highness, Sheikh Hamad covered the main issues which represent the concern of the developing countries related to the status of international economic cooperation and the contribution of the countries of the South to such cooperation and in particular the place of these countries in the world of today. Globalization, United Nations reforms and other key issues for the countries of the South will be discussed. The Heads of State and Government will review and adopt the two documents submitted to them by the ministers of Foreign Affairs, these documents are the Doha Declaration and the Doha Plan of Action, which will be published once approve by the Heads of state and Government.
