EU ready to help G-77 tackle poverty

Poverty alleviation and sustainable development, including economical, social and environmental aspects, are the common objectives of the Group of 77 and the European Union, Jean-Louis Schiltz, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action of Luxembourg, said yesterday in Doha, Qatar.

Addressing the Second South Summit on behalf of the EU, Schiltz reaffirmed the EU's strong support to efficient multilateralism and to the reform process of the United Nations.

The EU considers that it is essential to reach a balanced and ambitious outcome which makes it possible to reform the UN in order to respond in a more concrete and effective manner to threats and multi-dimensional challenges identified in the Secretary General report, Schiltz added.

The EU is actively involved in the fulfillment of Millennium Development Goals (MDG's), he said.

Between now and 2010, the EU and its member states will carry collectively their level of official development aid (ODA) to 0.56% of their gross national income (GNI), which means an additional amount of 20 billion Euros devoted to development.

The EU and its member states also committed themselves to reaching an ODA threshold of 0.70% of their GNI until 2015 which is the deal for the achievement of the (MDG's), the Luxembourg minister said.
