Leaders arrive in Doha for summit

 

HEADS of state and government began arriving in Doha yesterday to take part in the Second South Summit of the Group of 77 and China.

The leaders included Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifah; Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan presidents of the United Arab Emirates, Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen, Emile Lahoud of Lebanon, Abdulaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Auithority, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria; and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

In a statement upon his arrival, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa said the convening of the summit constitutes a significant event in light of the tremendous challenges facing developing countries in the political, economic, trade, financial, social and environmental spheres.

He called for adopting and promoting new strategies as well as strengthening co-operation and co-ordination between member states of the group in all areas in order to achieve sustainable development and have a collective vision to protect their joint interests.

For his part, Yemeni President Saleh expressed pleasure over visiting Qatar to take part in the summit which he said was being held in the light of challenges facing countries in the economic and trade spheres, the impact of globalisation, poverty and unemployment, besides the phenomenon of terrorism.

In a statement, Saleh said these challenges make it necessary that rich states shoulder their responsibilities towards assisting poor countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable development and tackle unemployment and poverty. – QNA
